Snocap Followup: Clarifications and Answers
December 14, 2006 by J. Botter
The folks from Snocap contacted me tonight after reading my previous post on the service to clarify some questions I had, so I wanted to take a moment to share what I learned from them with you.
- When someone wants to sell music through Snocap, they set a wholesale price, and then Snocap adds 45 cents to that wholesale price to come up with the final price of the track. If I wanted to sell one of my songs for 99 cents, then I’d set the wholesale price at 54 cents, and then Snocap would add the 99 cents to the wholesale price in order to make it 99 cents. An artist could set the wholesale price at 4 cents if they wished, which would then make the total price of the track 49 cents.
- The 10 cents/15% rule only applies to artists selling their music through a third party retailer, not to tracks sold directly from the MySpace (or MyStore, as they will be called). If you choose to sell through a third party (such as your website or blog or anywhere else besides the MyStore), then there will be a 10 cent or 15% fee (whichever is the higher number) tacked on. The artist still gets the entire wholesale price that they choose.
- I wondered about the 1000 tracks issue, and they clarified it: it’s not 1,000 tracks sold, but 1,000 actual songs. If you’re a small label releasing albums from four different bands, each with 5 songs, then that’s only 20 songs out of the 1,000 that you are allowed. Basically, this means that an indie band selling their tracks on the store will be able to do so forever (as long as they remain indie), because there’s no way anyone would be prolific enough to sell 1,000 songs in their career. Unless your name is Ryan Adams, at which point you would probably sell 1,000 different songs in four months. The next step up is for bigger indie labels or aggregators who sell tons of different bands.
- They only ask for a credit card for authorization to confirm your identity and to prevent identity fraud. They don’t charge anything, so that worry is alleviated.
All in all, I’m excited about Snocap. It’s a service that my band will be using to release our records for quite some time; although we’ll have distribution into every major online retailer through another service, we’ll still use Snocap to sell our tunes on MySpace because we have a large, dedicated following on the service and we want to make it easy for all of our fans and friends to buy our album. In the end, we don’t want to force people to use iTunes or another single service; we want to make it easy for them to buy the music the way THEY want to buy it.
Snocap looks to be a great option for the thousands of artists currently using MySpace to distribute their work and get some sort of monetary compensation for the music they create. The fact that they took time to email me personally after reading my blog post shows that they are dedicated to providing a great customer service experience, and I can’t imagine it not being a hugely successful venture.
UPDATE: Okay, folks…do NOT use Snocap. When they first launched (when I posted this email), they seemed like a great service. As time as gone on, however, I’ve seen thousands of artists get ripped off by them, and I am wholeheartedly recommending that everyone stay away from them. Instead of using them to sell your music on MySpace, simply go through TuneCore and place your music on iTunes, and then sell them using a link to your iTunes store.

Running with this Snocap to sell some songs exclusively through my myspace page. Let’s see what a concentrated promo campaign for this will turn out to be like after a quarter of 07…
Good article.
Thanks for the clarifying!
SnoCap provides an excellent service on paper, however, their customer service and database interaction is a nightmare. I signed up with SnoCap in early 2007. There were a number of problems I encountered:
Song Registry
My top selling songs disapeerd for no reason from the SnoCap MyStore. I went thru all the options on the website and reviewed the help section to no avail. Most frustrating is the fact that I can see my songs in the ‘available tracks’ section, but I cant move 3 of my songs over. I’ve tried using different browsers but the problem still persist’s. I’m losing alot of potential $ because of this. Imagine the embaressment if I did a show and none of the performance tracks were available online as promised? SnoCap is also losing money by default, so I figured they would be interested in helping with this. Well, 3 emails later, refrencing three similiar problems and I stilll have not recieved on substantial reply aside from their automated response (which even states they may not reply to you -bad wording).
Software Problems
SnoCap offers software that will fascilitate downloading the songs you buy. Unfortunaltey, firewalls and pop-up blockers can easily stop the software from downloading your music, leaving you with a bill and no song. 40% of my customers have had his problem. After contacting SnoCap’s customer service for an explanation they were never given an explanation or refund.
These are just two of the major problems I see with SnoCap. Its embarrising when my customers blame me for this program not working and wondering were their money went. And keep in mind, these are just the customers I know personally!
SnoCap needs to get a better customer service system up and running because people, in my experiecne, are litterally being ripped off due to an ineffective system.

I tried to register with them and I never received any response! No reply to my concerns from them.
Nothing!
I tried to call them and they seem to have gone to great lengths to hide their phone number. And I once I found one, the mailbox was full and no one ansered!
They suck ass!
I wonder if they are a real company or a fraud, stealing people’s credit card info!
Did you try sending an email to support@snocap.com? I can tell you that your results are not typical. When you register as an artist, a confirmation email with your password is sent to you. Sometimes those emails get blocked by spam filters. I can tell you that many tens of thousands of artists use SNOCAP successfully.
I can’t even upload my mp3 files through SNOCAP. I get an error message: file format not supported.
I know there’s nothing wrong with my .mp3 files, but I’ve gone back and recreated them using different methods, all to the same result.
I’ve written to SNOCAP’s customer support, a couple times, but have received no reply. After reading the posts here, I have serious doubts about this company.
Is there some reason why their system wouldn’t recognize mp3 files that works everywhere else? Are there other similar companies doing a better job providing this service that readers could recommend?
I know for a fact that many of my readers have had tons of trouble with Snocap. Given that I haven’t actually used it myself yet, I can’t say why your mp3 files wouldn’t be working, but I know there are other cases just like yours.
The Snocap guys are usually pretty good about commenting on user issues, so I would expect a response from them here at some point over the next few days.
SAme trouble as many of you. My songs wont appear in the store. They indicate that the MP3s are uploaded but they are not recognized by the store. I tried to contact costumer support to no avail. I have decided NOT to use them at all. There are other options like creating links to buy your ssongs and CDs through CDBaby.com. They are ALWAYS on the ball and deserve the respect they get.
WHat would ou expect from a Rupert Murdoch company? DO you think they give a shit about anything but making maney? I don’t.
I’ve had a Snocap account since early-mid 2k6. Although I have not had some of the upload issues mentioned here, I’ve had several customers I know personally say they’ve had issues downloading their songs after purchase. I’ve even had to resort to sending them our songs via YouSendit. And thats just the people that I know. Some of the others I didn’t know didnt take it too well. After several attempts to get a response from Snocap, Ive pretty much given up on their support system. It really is lame. I’ve only received their crappy auto replies on each case except for when there was that dispute mixup when CDBABY registerd a ton of their artists songs. THAT issue eventually resolved by a letter being sent from CDBABY to them explaining I DID have the rights to sell a remix we did. All in all, I hope Snocap turns out to be something worth keeping. I’m a little uneased about some claims i’ve heard were artist have had tracks purchased, but not show up in their tracks sold summary. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Hopefully we won’t see a “Snocap fraud” article in Yahoo someday. Thanks for posting this article and sharing what info they’ve provided you.
I have been using SnoCap for sometime and have had NO issues at all. I hope that it stays that way
Feel free to visit my page and check it out!
SNOCAP is a rip off.
I have a music snocap page and a personal / buyer account. they took my money via paypal. ……..I bought one of my own tracks and when i went to my music
it went through and i downloaded the song.
however when i went to my music store they never told me about the sale. it said that i hd 0 balance. so they took my money and i didn’t get paid.
and now i can’t even log in anymore! and when i try changing my password, to see if that solves the problem……i don’t get the email from them with the “link to change password” that they claim they send.
I can’t get get rid of the store…it’s stuck to my myspace profile……when i go to edit my myspace page and click on edit music store, it just links me to snocap.com……but i can’t even log in!!!!
I’m stuck to that store on my myspace page…..and even though they could be making money from it , i’m not making any money from it ……
they don’t have any kind of customer service…so i’m stuck!!!!!
how can i get rid of this thing???????????!!!!!
SNOCAP is a total SCAM! They don’t pay the artists and their customer service is nonexistent.
Need proof? Here’s plenty:

Avoid SNOCAP at all costs. Like several here have already said, it’s a total ripoff!
I fully agree with Mark!!! I have not received a statement for over 6 months and every time i contact them they send me a auto response email. You can never get ahold of anyone!
THEY ARE STEALING MONEY FROM THEIR CUSTOMERS!!!!
TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW THAT USES SNOCAP!!!!
Think about it. They dont pay out until your account reaches $20.00 in sales. When they launched, thousands of indie artists signed up, like I did. I sold about $12.00 worth of tunes. That was over a year ago, and since I did not hit the $20 mark, I have not been paid, but Snocap has had my $12 the whole time, multiply that by thousands, and you will see that Snocap all of the sudden had hundreds of thousands of dollars to invest, and make money on the interest, while never paying the artists. WHat a brilliant plan!! peace
nate
I have contacted the I guess Snocap company 18 times in emails and I always get a generated response telling me how busy they are. I have been with them for four months selling with 20 different artists and I haven’t seen one red cent. Nor have I been able to find a phone number or human being that works for them. Has anyone ever made any money using this so called company. Please contact me. I would like to see how you did it……..!!!!!At this point I am canceling every service that I have with them and recommending to every soul I can think of not to ever go near them. This is the biggest scam I’ve seen since Watergate. Can you tell I’m pissed off yet Snocap? It would be real nice if you answer your f****** emails SNocAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for f****** starters! Snocap you should change your name to Snoballed!!!!
Below are 2 e-mails that I sent regarding SuckCap…oop’’s Snocap- What Ever!
I can’t begin to tell you how displeased I am with my current account. Nothing works on it. I can’t hear the music I upload, and I have to reset my password every time I long on to Snocap. I am sending you a copy of the letter that I have been sending to your staff at Snocap. I am also sending a copy of the letter I wrote to Myspace regarding Snocap.
I really need this account and I don’t want to cancel, but I will do just that if the problems are not resolved soon.
Regards,
David Hope
I have “2″ problems.
1. I uploaded my tunes via snocap to my “myspace” account. The tunes have been there for almost 4 days and every time I try to click on the track to listen to it it reads, “We’re Sorry! Our sample of this song is temporarily unavailable.
2. I have to reset my password every time I use my account. I “know” that I am typing in my password correctly, and I simply can’t be wrong after redoing this step over “8″ times. For some reason, your site does not store my password.
Please advise.
(Second e-mail)
Dear My Space and Snocap:
I know that myspace and snocap are 2 different compnays;
however, I feel that myspace should see to it that if they
allow sites such as "Snocap" to operate on myspace, snocap
should at least provide a higher quality of service.
I am heart broke over the failures connected to my Snocap
account. First, I up loaded my songs over 5 days ago and
every time I click on the visible listing to play the tune I
get a message that reads, " We’re Sorry! Our sample of this
song is temporarily unavailable." So, I delete the
selections, thinking maybe I did something wrong, I follow
the required steps "to the exact," and still I get, " We’re
Sorry! Our sample of this song is temporarily unavailable!"
Second, I have to reset my password every time I log on to
Snocap! It will "Not" store my password.
I have "4" internet radio interviews next month. It is very,
very important for this artist to be able to sell and
promote my material on Myspace. I have written "many"
e-mails to Snocap support. I have not received any response
in over 3 months of trying to deal with them. I am so fed up
with Snocap that I wish I could just make my Snocap player
on my myspace account go away! Now I am stuck with a player
that will not allow downloads. It makes "Me, as well as my
site" look untrustworthy and foolish!
In close I am asking you "Myspace" to please intervene on my
behalf. Maybe if you point out that it not only makes Snocap
look bad to do business this way, it also reflects on Myspace.
I am going to copy paste this e-mail and also send it to
Snocap support. If it is like all of my other attempts
"unanswered" it won’’t shock me.
I look forward to hearing from you.
