Fantasy Football: Week 6 Update
After losing the first two games of the season, I’m now 3-2 and have been the league’s highest scorer over the past 3 weeks. I’ve started playing the matchups every week instead of just keeping my drafted players; what I mean is, I’ve got a few guys on the team who are untouchable (Addai, Driver, Witten) and everyone else is expendable. This is FAR different than my old strategy, in which I kept almost everyone I drafted and hoped for big numbers from them throughout the season. As a result of that strategy, I’ve been able to exploit some matchups for big points, and I’ve turned it around after a depressing first couple of weeks.Highlights of my wins:
- I got Jeff Reed before week 3, and he put 14 points on the board. Pittsburgh was playing San Francisco and I figured he’d get to kick a lot, and he did: 3 field goals and 4 extra points. I also started Donovan McNabb after being THISCLOSE to benching him, and he was masterful in getting me 29 points.
- I picked up Dwayne Bowe before week 4 because he was looking good AND he was playing the crappy San Diego pass defense, and he scored 22 points for me. Cassidy (my opponent) said I lucked out in getting a “no name” guy to score that many points, but there’s a reason I picked up Bowe and started him that week, and I got the W because of it.
- Week 5 was all about one pickup for me: knowing that Joseph Addai was going to be limited in playing time or not playing at all, I went after two current backup RB’s in Selvin Young and Kenton Keith. I figured that both of them would be good options should Addai sit out, but Young’s playing time would be predicated on whether or not Travis Henry recovered from an injury/was suspended. Sunday morning, it looked like Henry was going to play and the Colts made the announcement that Addai was out for the game, so I started Kenton Keith, and that was one of the best moves I’ve made all year long. Keith ran for 121 yards and 2 TD’s and gave me my most lopsided win of the season.
For week six: Addai is out on bye this week, so I picked up Correll Buckhalter. Brian Westbrook is still hurting and Buckhalter will probably get plenty of chances to run, and there’s just not much else on the waiver wire that can help me at running back right now. I like the Eagles matchup on Sunday, too, and I think he’ll have a good game.
