More On The Tejada Trade
I’ve been thinking about the Tejada trade all morning since the news broke.
I’m not sure I like it. Richard Justice says that Houston will fall in love with Miggy, and that might be the case. He’s a guy with an oversized personality who will fit in perfectly with clowns like Carlos and Berkman, and his bat makes the Astros lineup one of the most potent in the National League. He’s an All Star caliber guy who had a rough season last year, so if he returns to his old form, it’s a great pickup for the club.
My concern is over what we gave up to get him.
Luke Scott was one of my favorite players on the team, not really because of his skills but because of his personality. Our seats are directly behind the wall in right field, and he was always incredibly personable and nice, and even threw me a ball at the end of an inning last summer. I knew he was the odd man out after the Michael Bourn pickup, and I knew he’d be gone before the season started, but it still made me a little sad.
The one player we gave up in this entire deal that really worries me is Troy Patton. Yeah, he’s unproven, but so was Roy Oswalt at one point in time. Patton is the one guy Houston fans have been clamoring for the past two years, and he finally made it to the show at the end of the 2007 season. He didn’t light the world on fire with his pitching, but he had so few appearances that you can’t even begin to judge what he might become.
It just seems like we gave up a lot. Yes, I’m excited to have Miguel Tejada in town, and I can’t wait to see him play next year. His bat gives us some serious thump in our lineup, and we’re going to score a lot of runs. But we gave up 5 players to get him, 3 of which I thought would be regulars on the club next year.
I guess I’m just hoping that it won’t be another Jason Jennings trade.
